Clams

So we decided to take a mini vacation last week. We drove down to Homer. It is about 4.5 hours away. Homer is famous for Halibut fishing and it is where the highway that runs through Anchorage and out to Canada ends. It is a beautiful drive. I was a little nervous about going. It snowed about 3.5 inches the day before we were going, but the sun came out and melted almost all the snow before we got started. It was a great drive. We took it slow going up there stopping to see things and to go fishing.
We stayed at a cute little bed and breakfast. It was like a mini apartment. It had everything you could need. A fully stocked kitchen, 2 bedrooms with extra beds. It would sleep about 9 with all the extra beds. When we got there there was about 10 juvenile bald eagles flying above us. We had a great view of the ocean and lands end.
We took the kids to the end of the land and fished and looked for shells. We saw where the Time Bandit from the show Deadliest Catch docks it boat. We didn't get to see the actual boat but there was a store for it. It was windy and cold but very beautiful.
On Monday we went clamming. You have to go when the tide is out and go out close to the water to dig for them. Luckily Kaleb has a friend who goes clamming and was nice enough to let us borrow his clam gun and shovels. You have to look for little holes in the sand where the clams have air bubbles, that is the spot to dig. It is a good thing we had the clam gun, they were down deep because it is still pretty cold. It doesn't look to be that hard to do, but it is. The hard part is pulling up the sand. It is heavy and most of the time you start sinking in the surrounding sand. It was a blast.
Kaleb, the wonderful father that he is, helped the kids out. They were shoveling, which doesn't work because they are too deep, decided to let them dig and "find them". They would be digging their little hearts out and Kaleb would slip a clam in their hole. They were so excited when they finally started to get some. That made my heart melt. He is such a great Dad. After the tide stared to come back in we had to leave. It was a sandy mess but it was such a great trip. I cannot wait for summer to get here so that we can do more mini vacations.
